Tropic Thunder

Just been to see Tropic Thunder with Rae-rae and Becsi, you know, over at the vue theatre in the Lowry. It's a comedy spoof about a washed up Rambo-esque star Tug Speedman (Ben Stiller) who goes to make a Vietnam war/escape from POW camp film. After the initial failure of Speedman and his co-stars to "gel" the executive producer Les Grossman (Tom Cruise) orders the noobie director Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan) to sort it out.
Damien's solution, inspired by the man who wrote the book on which film is based, John "Four-Leaf" Tayback (Nick Nolte) is to take the actors into the jungle with no crew or assistants and film their "real fear". Of course things don't go to plan, Damien blows himself up on a land mine three minutes in, but the actors don't believe it's real and so continue as normal.
The film is slow moving, dull and hugely unfunny. It becomes a spoof of a spoof of a spoof to a point where you're not sure about what the actual joke is supposed to be. Stiller has seized the opportunity to laugh at himself, but it's not funny and I was just cringing at the sight of a man trying too hard to convince me that he can take a joke. What joke? The joke isn't even on you, Stiller, there is no joke.
This film isn't even worth £1 at a car-boot sale... don't just give it a miss, do your best to avoid it!

I was going to go and see this film Simon, but I know what you mean about comedys that really try hard to be funny and just don't cut it. I had that feeling with 'Fun with Dick and Jane', and ironic title is there ever was one.

I'll do as you say and give it a miss. I'll save my money to watch the new Star Trek (out next May) a second time.
